Many people experienced the recent past as a difficult and disheartening time, for various, important reasons or even for what didn’t seem like a big reason, comparatively, but rather what felt like a pervasive or undercurrent feeling. While the leaves and grass turn color, and the weather is also occasionally sunny and gorgeous, it is possible to feel both the pattern of difficulty continuing and, at the same time, to sense an opening to a change of season of spaciousness, contentedness and goodness.
I believe this season could include being good to ourselves. This can take many different forms. Sometimes we prepare early, work hard and push the limits for a project. Other times we turn off all electrical gadgets and become incognito in our lives – or at least turn off the TV and the computer an hour before going to sleep. Or, we may find that giving or doing for others gives us a lift that we didn’t expect. I experienced all of these forms of self-care and care of others during August and the beginning of September. For the past couple of weeks, I have experienced more calm. During the coming weeks, I anticipate including and creating even more space, gratitude, a touch of luxury (a couple of chocolate squares, healthy tea, or sitting and reading a magazine for half an hour) and support, as self-care. Hopefully this will allow me to also be abundantly giving to others. This fall, if you feel called or drawn to include any of Healing All’s Healing Arts services or workshops in your life, as self-care or for the care of another, please contact us.

Additional thoughts: For me, a short period of calm, order and spaciousness preceded the recent intense period. The recent past and present have included my attempts to be more productive and put things “out there” in almost every area of my life – work, business, volunteer life, home and more. For weeks, possibly months, it felt like I had been living my life’s equivalent of a school’s finals week. And, just like during finals week, although I would pause and find some moments of calm, several everyday things remained undone and family and friends heard less from me. The balance has shifted again toward calm and good, with a little intensity sprinkled in. My goal, going forward, is to live a full, rich life and also allow for space, comfort and surrounding grace.
When I was thinking about the past, present and future, the below were the images that came to mind:
A left-side glance at friends, family, community and self surrounded by sunny open space. Various differentiated and softly combined jumbles of yarn, string, and thread. An empty spool. A thin dark thread long and taut over a river at the bottom of a narrow, deep chasm, on the other side winding into an intricate, multi-colored mosaic, an open circle at the center, suspended and still in a glowing, breathtaking natural landscape of God’s.
