So many things have been happening around the world recently that are out of our control – earthquakes, floods, job losses and more. And yet, we continue on. To quote Jane Addams: “What after all has maintained the human race on this [ ] globe despite all the calamities of nature and all the tragic failings of mankind, if not faith in new possibilities and the courage to advocate them.” Not only do we continue on, we dream and often thrive. We reach out to help those in need, and build towards recovery. Nature also flourishes, sending us an abundant spring.
Despite many things being out of our control, we have all had experiences of wishing for something and having it come true. Although we sometimes don’t control the timing (obtaining a new job a year and a half after affirming we wanted one) or the form (we really wanted a “labradoodle” puppy, but bring home a “mutt” we fell in love with at the rescue shelter) — wishes, goals and dreams can and do manifest on a small and grand scale. Individually, a sports player who visualizes making a basket, goal or touch down has a greater percentage of success than one who doesn’t. And, regardless of our politics, on a national and global level, not very many decades after segregation and a “Dream” speech, the United States has an African American/minority president.
If we picture and affirm goals, dreams and wishes, they have a greater chance of coming into being. Helpful tools to assist us in visualizing and realizing them are affirmations and vision boards.

Words are effective, and pictures even more so.
On a personal note… While thinking about buying my first house, I attended an affirmations/ vision board workshop. I put many cut-out magazine pictures on the board. One was an image of living room with couches and books. I looked long and hard for a house (effort and “allowing” ourselves to have something are part of the journey also.) I strongly connected to a cute remodel and made an offer on it. After 4 months of uncertainty around the closing, the house fell through. The weekend before the sale fell through, I went to an open house for a house I liked, that was move-in ready. This house closed in less than a month.
I started with a picture of a comfortable living room. I have such a living room now. Looking back, I am happy that I have the house that I have now and not the one I put the original offer on. But, it was a painful process to let go of that first house. And, I hadn’t been able to control when the sale would close – if at all. Still, it is good to have goals and dreams. That is what the Affirmations & Vision Board Workshop is about. Affirmations; creating images of our goals and dreams; and holding space open for the hope that they will come true.
